This afternoon my friend Justin and I "accidentally" hiked Static Peak. At 3:30 pm we started out for a small afternoon hike. After making several spur of the moment decisions at trail intersections, and continuing past several points where we should have turned around due to the time, we found ourselves just a few hundred feet from the peak. So we climbed it. The view up there is amazing, even with all the smoke in the area! And then we hiked in the dark for a while to get out. The NPS describes the hike to the divide this way, "Static Peak Divide, 16.3 miles RT, 10 hours, 5250 ft total climbing, VERY STRENUOUS." The peak is just above the divide. We completed it in 6 1/2 hours, even with going pretty slow for the hour and a half of hiking that was in the pitch dark.
